    1. It is no wonder that at times while walking along the streets of Cairo I feel that I am in an Italian city. While reading this book I learned that many of the builders of Khedive Ismael’s modern Cairo, a Paris on the Nile, were Italians such as Pietro Avoscani, builder of the Cairo Opera house. A new cosmopolitan Cairo, civilized in the European fashion was the dream of Khedive Ismael, grandson of Muhammad Ali and ruler of Egypt from 1863 to 1879.     2. Mynnti buys into the nostalgic view of Cairo and the prevalent narrative of decay, and spins the years of imperial influence that produced Khedival Cairo as the "cosmopolitan years". I gave it two stars instead of one because it's a pretty picture book, and because it does a good job of documenting architecture in the area.
