    2. The more I read Balzac, the more fascinating it becomes. A couple of the minor, yet pivotal, characters in this novel are related to the minor, yet pivotal, characters in his Cesar Birotteau. It is no wonder that Zola, greatly influenced by Balzac, created a family genealogy in writing his series Les Rougon-Macquart.Maybe many authors give their characters physical characteristics that inform their personalities. I certainly notice it in Balzac. "His hands, which were short and broad, were of th [...]

    4. Pierrette Lorrain, an orphan has been living happily with her grandmother since the age of six when two older cousins, retired brother and sister shopkeepers, decide they should become her guardians. Why? Because they think she will have some money coming to her.She is given money for the journey by her childhood companion, Brigaut. The cousins are very stingy and begrudge every expense, making her pay her way by working as a servant in the house. Pierrette is so miserable and feels so unloved t [...]

    5. A little gem from Balzac, one of his dominant theme of stories of injustice triumphing over innocence as a result of a cabal in which the like-thinking enemies agree to pool their resources. The title character is a sweet little Breton girl who is "rescued" from an institution by the Rogrons, an unmarried brother and sister who proceed to mistreat the girl. Everything and everybody conspires against Pierrette, except for her childhood friend Brigaut, who loves her. A very sad story, but one wort [...]

    6. If you belong to the school of thought which holds that Madame Bovary encourages adultery and Othello domestic violence, then you'll probably decide that this book condones child abuse. Just so that you're warned.

    7. A wonderful portrayal of the despicable lives of two of Balzac's "Celibates." It is also a rare tale in which Balzac adds some real emotional thrust as poor, abused Pierrette's million year old grandma comes to her rescuert of. Dig it.

    8. One of Balzac's weepies: a tad overdone but still it has the ring of truth as all his stories do. A vulnerable girl tricked out of her inheritance, taken in by two relations who exploit her and finally denied not only happiness but justice too.
